If adventure and nature are your things then join us on this five day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu from Cusco city. Salkantay Trail is a perfect combination of scenic trails that offers awe-inspiring views of the Peruvian highland scenery.

Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu is a popular alternative to the Inca Trail. Although the major difference between the two is that the Inca trail is dotted with many Inca ruins while Salkantay Trail is a high altitude trek. It takes you around the snow-capped Salkantay mountain down to the cloud forest in the Amazon region.

This high altitude trek starts in the Andes and takes you to the most photographed turquoise lake, Lake Humantay. On the second day, you will be conquering the highest point of the trail, Salkantay Pass and enter the Amazon region. On the fourth day, you will be visiting the sunning Llactapata Inca site from where you will get the first view of Machu Picchu.

As the name suggests, this five days Classic Salkantay Trek to Machu Pichu culminates with a locally guided tour of Machu Picchu.

You will be passing through many remote highland Andean villages and communities. Our guide will be giving you an insight into their lives and traditions.

If you want to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain after you Machu Picchu on the fifth day, do let us know at the time of booking the trek. There is limited access to these mountains in a day and often permits are sold out months in advance.

Salkantay Trek Peru Difficulty:

Salkantay Trail is somewhat a challenging experience. Primarily because of many high altitudes passes. The highest point of the trek is Salkantay Pass at 4630 meters above sea level (15,190 ft.). You will be conquering this on the second day of the trek.

We strongly recommend you spend 4-5 days in Cusco before the trek to avoid altitude sickness. Also, consider doing short hikes like the Rainbow Mountain trek and tours to the Sacred Valley of the Incas whilst you are acclimatising in Cusco.

After a short introduction and safety briefing, we will check all our equipment and begin the trek. Following a well-established trail, we will gradually make our way up the hill. We will be covering a distance of 16 km (9.9 miles).

Along the trail, you will be immersed in the stunning views of snow-capped Andean peaks and glaciers. A part of the trail will be along the restored Inca water channel. It is the main supply of water to local farms in the vicinity.

Just before reaching our campsite in Soraypamapa (3,800m/12,084ft.), you will get a closer view of the Salkantay Peak, also known as the Savage mountain looming high above us.

Our campsite is snuggled between Salkantay and Humantay peak. The temperature here often drops below zero. So, make sure to carry your thermal wear.
