The Sacred Valley Tour is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Cusco region. This is mostly due to its stunning scenery, imposing mountains, pleasant climate, fertile land with an abundance of water, and megalithic cultural evidences. Additionally, if travelers are concerned about elevation sickness, the Sacred Valley is ideal for acclimating to the overall higher elevation because it stands at a lower height than Cusco.

The main places to visit are: Pisaq with its colorful fair; Calca with its hot springs; Yucay with its Inca palace; Urubamba with its natural beauty and adventure sports; Chinchero with its handicraft market where barter is still practiced; Maras with its famous salt mines as well as Moray with its admirable agricultural laboratory, and lastly Ollantaytambo with its majestic monuments.

The traditional Sacred Valley Tour typically departs from Cusco and takes you first to Pisaq, then Urubamba, ending in Ollantaytambo. If you do this however, you are likely to miss out on the terraces in Moray, the salt mines in Maras, and the famous textiles in Chinchero. To tour the whole Sacred Valley in one day is not feasible, but by taking this alternative route that we are suggesting, you will be able to cover more ground than you would on the traditional tour.

Itinerary

Starting from Cusco, we would first go to Chinchero to explore the weaving centers and learn about the traditional methods used to create the textiles that this area is famous for. Next, we travel through Maras to reach the ruins of Moray which would be followed by a trip to the salt mines. There are over 3,000 fountains which are owned by the local families of Maras who harvest and sell the salt. If you are interested, there are many excellent traditional restaurants in Urubamba which is only a 30-minute walk from the mines.

After an hour lunch break, we will continue to Ollantaytambo where you will have the chance to explore the ruins and the town. The town itself is considered to be a living Inca museum and also the gateway to Machu Picchu. Most of the buildings and streets are original structures from the Inca Empire. If you do not want to stay in Aguas Calientes because you would prefer a less crowded, quieter location, then this is where you can spend the night before you take the train to Aguas Calientes. You may instead opt to take the night train to Aguas Calientes. This will allow you to not only be at Machu Picchu early enough to catch the sunrise but to also arrive before the people who are catching the early morning trains. After your visit to Machu Picchu, you will take the train from Aguas Calientes back to Ollantaytambo, and then ride back to Cusco.

If you are still interested in visiting Pisaq, there are a couple of options for you. If you are staying in Ollantaytambo for a few days, you could take a taxi to Pisaq
